earthquake“My cousin died in Affrin . My cousin’s children died in northern Syria. Another cousin died in Turkey,” said Al-Khalaf, a Syrian who moved to Canada and settled in Hamilton three years ago. “I have, so far, 50 names of relatives , including 10 second-degree family members.”

The collection centre is one of hundreds that have popped up across Canada in the wake of the Feb. 6 disaster that has killed more than 20,000 people. Online funds are also being raised by Canadian NGOs and non-profits, including the Sima Acan, president of the FCTA, said hundreds of volunteers are working in the centres around the clock, taking in clothes, blankets, winter jackets, shoes and gloves. The FCTA also encourages donations of tents, diapers, hygiene products and non-perishable food. The donations are sorted, packaged and flown to Turkey daily. “We are not holding the donations, because there is no time for waiting,” she said. “It’s freezing cold there.
