Looking at every Sydney seat, the city can be divided into three distinctive groups.

Australia said a resounding No to a Voice to parliament – but in Sydney, the result was a bit more complicated. The electorates of “global Sydney”, which cluster around the harbour and stretch north and south of the central business district, embraced the Voice. In Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s electorate of Grayndler, which takes in Balmain, Leichhardt and Marrickville, 74 per cent voted Yes .

Two polling places were emblematic of the divide between the centre and the periphery. In the booth at Newtown East, the Yes vote was 89.6 per cent. But at Berkshire Park, north of Penrith, the No vote was 84 per cent.

The referendum results in many western Sydney electorates, where income levels are broadly similar to the Australian average, were in line with national voting patterns. Voters in Sydney electorates that voted Yes were also much more likely to be university-educated than those in No-voting seats.
