A number of Sydney’s most sought-after private schools are operating with hundreds more students than they are allowed to have.
At Barker College, enrolments exceeded the council-approved maximum student cap by 343 pupils last year. The former all-boys school, which became fully co-educational last year, has seen student numbers swell in the past five years with 2763 pupils enrolled in 2022.
Student caps are imposed by local councils and state planning authorities and consider local infrastructure, parking, noise impact and traffic conditions around a school.Independent schools that have hit their cap are often seeking planning approval to increase numbers, but councils have the power to take legal action against schools breaching limits and schools can ultimately face hefty fines of millions of dollars.
“This increase in demand from parents seeking enrolment in a high quality local school has now become a trend and as a result, current numbers are not a fluctuation, but reflective of consistent demand,” she said. Principal Tim Bowden said enrolment demand at the all-boys school, which charges fees of up to $40,000, is high and increasing. “The decision to grow enrolment was informed by that demand. If families want a Trinity education, we want to be able to offer it to them,” he said.
The Scots College in Bellevue Hill has also exceeded the number of students approved for its Victoria Road campus. According to an independent audit, student enrolments at the senior school have risen consistently over the decade to 1489 in 2020, well over its limit of 1120 pupils.
