Hundreds of Sydneysiders grabbed their beach towels today as a heatwave struck the city. It comes as extreme fire danger warnings are issued for parts of New South Wales over the next four days. 9News READ MORE:

A "low intensity" heatwave is expected to hit NSW, south-east Queensland, South Australia and Victoria over the weekend.

Senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology Olenka Duma said extreme fire danger ratings had been issued for the central and southern NSW ranges today. "We are seeing these warm temperatures make their way across the state from central parts of Australia and they are being dragged across the state from a series of cold fronts, one which is moving through today and another which is moving through on Sunday," Duma said.

Gusty conditions associated with a mix of troughs bringing warm air across the country will gradually start to heat up southern states such as Victoria and South Australia as well in the coming days.Meanwhile, fresh data has revealed global ocean temperatures have "rebounded" to record-challenging highs this week, as the planet brushes off the cool influence of La Niña.
