SYDNEY MINES, N.S. — For more than 75 years, the Knights of Columbus hall was the heart of social life in Sydney Mines and surrounding areas.

Before it was destroyed by fire in 2014, the three-storey building on View Street had been the setting for countless wedding receptions, baby showers, anniversaries and, of course, the famous Thursday night dances.John Higgins, president of the Knights of Columbus Council 2024 Columbian Club, said originally they had planned to rebuild on the same property. However, rising construction costs combined with the loss of key KOC members eventually put that dream out of reach.

So, the faith-based service club, which celebrated its centennial in 2019, decided to take the money they’d set aside — $273,000 — and spread it throughout the community to worthy organizations. “The community supported us throughout those 100 years when we had our building in operation on View Street in Sydney Mines,” explained Higgins. “When we decided that we weren't going to rebuild after the fire that we had in 2014, it was a way for us to give back to all of these different organizations that help out the community in different ways.
