The City of Sydney is the latest council seeking to stop property developers knocking down old residential blocks to build luxury apartments.

Property developers are bulldozing residential blocks in inner-city suburbs to create luxury developments with fewer apartments, prompting local councils to investigate ways to prevent a loss of housing stock.

“A city that turns into nothing more than an enclave for the wealthy might seem rich in dollars, but it would be poor in every other way,” she said. “Environmental impact is another reason we should be encouraging renovation and renewal of buildings, and demolition only as a last resort,” she said. “The current structure and design of the building doesn’t allow for the building to maximise efficiency of occupancy,” he said.

Woollahra Council voted last month to investigate new planning rules to prevent a net reduction of dwellings on development sites and require a social impact statement if a reduction in the number of homes is proposed.
