Bought out by the Canucks in the summer of 2021, Virtanen signed with Moscow Spartak for the 2021-22 KHL season. But like many other non-Russian players, Virtanen bolted from the KHL after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February 2022.

He spent the NHL pre-season on a tryout with the Edmonton Oilers, but the Canucks’ Pacific Division rivals didn’t offer him a permanent contract. It’s hard for free agents in early October to find spots in Europe, no matter what your previous record may be.
