A beluga whale suspected of being trained by Russians has recently re-sparked rumours after it sped up and rushed into Swedish waters.

In 2019 the marine mammal was found wearing a harness marked"equipment of St Petersburg" and had go pro mounts, suited for a camera, attached to it.

Initially discovered in Norway, residents nicknamed the beluga"Hvaldimir" in a play on the native word"hval" for whale and ending in"dimir" as a nod to the alleged Russian association. On Monday, Norwegian marine biologists tracking the whale’s movements revealed the mammal had started behaving out of character.

OneWhale marine biologist Sebastian Strand said the recent movements were “puzzling” as the whale moved away from its natural environment.“Or it could be loneliness, as belugas are a very social species – it could be that he’s searching for other beluga whales.” Beluga whales are extremely social mammals, typically hunting and migrating together in pods of ten animals on average.
