“And then we will register everybody and, depending, it could be a two-hour wait, it could be a three-hour wait. Some people wait all day. We’ve had people who’ve registered at 9 o’clock in the morning and were seen, depending on our day, could be 4 o’clock.” The clinics have seen up to 100 people in one day on a day when the schedule allows but sometimes only about 25 people can be seen if the cases are particularly complex.

“We allow patients to book up to a week ahead,” she said. “ It’s not fun having to line up bright and early in the morning, it’s not good for anyone.”Becket said appointments, which are handled by a mix of 22 family doctors and specialists, are always 100 per cent booked. “We used to be open Monday to Friday with evening hours and even Saturday,” she said. “Now we only have two days of service per week because we don’t have the doctors.”The most recent update of Nova Scotia Health’s need-a-family-practice registry on Jan. 1 shows 129,321 people on the list, a net increase of about 4,000 people from the previous month.

In an email Friday, spokesperson Khalehla Perrault said Medimap’s wait-time survey worked with limited data “and was not completed by a neutral third party.”
