A large fire has erupted at a building in Surry Hill, near Central station. Some roads and the light rail are closed.

The fire that engulfed a Surry Hills building has not caused any public injuries and casualties, NSW Police deputy commissioner Paul Pisanos has confirmed.

“The information we have at this stage was the buildings were vacant or unoccupied,” he told reporters. The plans by developer Hanave Pty Ltd included converting four adjoining buildings on Randle Street into hotel or motel accommodation, in a manner that ensures the heritage of the hat factory was retained and conserved. The cost of project was reportedly about $40 million.
