An increasing number of women are putting their hand up to become surrogate mothers.

The Northern Territory was the last jurisdiction to legalise surrogacy afterThe arrangement commonly involves gestational or traditional surrogacy .However, family and surrogacy lawyer Sarah Jefford, who "assists with the majority of surrogacy arrangements in Australia", estimated there were about 100 births each year, based on information from IVF clinics.

Ms Jefford said if the surrogate reneged on the arrangement, the intended parents could take action in the Family Court."It doesn't matter who provides the genetic material … the legal perspective is the same." Narelle Dickinson, a clinical psychologist and fertility counsellor, said discussions before a surrogacy could proceed needed to include the impact of the parties' physical and mental health.
