Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum says the city is moving ahead as planned with creating its own police force, despite some councillors’ concerns.

Surrey’s proposed municipal police force now has its own website, a car emblazoned with a new “Surrey Police” logo, and a promotional video featuring digitally altered stock photos of cops wearing Surrey badges.

Last November, after McCallum’s election on a promise to create a municipal police force, council unanimously moved to end the city’s RCMP contract. That same month, the city appointed a team to prepare a policing transition plan to be sent to the B.C. government for approval. Solicitor General Mike Farnworth, speaking Tuesday to reporters in Victoria, said McCallum’s predicted timeline of a July 2020 rollout means “it’s probably even more important that I see a policing transition plan that meets the needs of the people of Surrey.”

Immediately after McCallum’s speech, Surrey RCMP commanding officer Dwayne McDonald said McCallum’s expectation of local cops on the streets by next summer sounded “very ambitious.”Asked about McCallum’s prediction of a 10-per-cent increase for the city’s police budget, McDonald replied: “Again, that also sounds ambitious and optimistic, but we’ll wait for the plan.”

“We have no idea what it’s going to cost or what the model is going to look like,” Annis said. “This is one of the biggest decisions the City of Surrey is ever going to make, and we’ve got to do it right. We can’t be putting the cart before the horse.”
