Plan to attend Saturday’s Vaisakhi celebrations in Surrey on an empty stomach as free food is a big part of the annual Sikh harvest festival.
Milk and butter could be in short supply in Surrey this weekend as families prepare to feed the 500,000 people expected to attend the city’s annual Vaisakhi celebration on Saturday.
“It’s a place where you come, and sit, and eat together,” explained Singh. “It helps to break down barriers.” Families will often join together to cook foods, beginning the preparation several days in advance, spending upwards of $5,000.Inside the Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple on Friday, several huge freezers worked to keep food fresh, while in the courtyard outside, people chopped vegetables and seared meats in preparation for the next day’s feast.
Some tips include taking a photo of everyone before leaving the house so police have an accurate description to go on, as well as ensuring everyone has identification with them. The parade will start at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar Temple at 12885 85th Avenue at 9:30 a.m. and end at the same location at about 4 p.m. Road closures will be in place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
