A series of powerful storms moving across Australia's south-east on Good Friday will leave clearer skies but colder weather in their wake, writes Sky New Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne.
A significant storm outbreak could disrupt your long weekend if you live anywhere east of a straight line between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast.
The nature of storms makes it difficult to pinpoint their exact location, but a broad region in eastern Australia from south-east Queensland down through to Melbourne risks being hit by supercell storms – particularly the ranges and slopes of NSW. Rug up for the Easter egg hunt if you live in the south-east; it’s likely to be the coldest day of the year across Tasmania and Victoria, with Melbourne’s official forecast of 14C on track for the coldest Easter Sunday since 1943.
Meanwhile, in the Arafura Sea north of Darwin, a tropical low is forming and pushing westwards from Good Friday. If it remains in Australian waters while intensifying it will be named Tropical Cyclone Ilsa.
