MELAKA: Sungai Lereh has turned inky again and an improper release of the discharge from the Sungai Udang landfill is believed to be the cause, says the Klebang assemblyman
Datuk Lim Ban Hong said the effluent released from water treatment ponds at Sungai Udang and the contamination has severely affected the livelihoods of the fishermen in the area.
He said that the pollution had caused itchiness in fishermen who have come in contact with the water. "I have asked the Melaka Department of Environment to do a water sample analysis to see whether there are any violations of the law," he said after visiting the site on Thursday .He said the pollution of Sungai Lereh would lead to destructive consequences for fishing communities and the environment, as the river supports a biodiverse ecosystem.Meanwhile, fisherman Zainuddin Aluwi said that the pollution has affected his livelihood.
