On Feb. 20, members of the Summerside Fire Department rescued a woman from the ice in the Summerside Harbour.SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Members of the Summerside Fire Department rescued a woman stuck on the ice in Summerside Harbour.
At around 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 20, the Summerside Fire Department received calls from residents who had heard the woman’s cries for help.Upon hearing a shout from the woman and confirming there was someone on the ice, emergency personnel boarded the department’s ice rescue truck and headed out in search of her.
“We kind of had a rough idea, from where I was standing, facing west, was at 10 or 11 o’clock,” said Ron Enman, chief of the Summerside Fire Department. “It was so foggy that you really couldn’t see anything.”To help locate the woman through the fog, one of the firefighters brought out the thermal imaging camera. Around 10 to 15 minutes after arriving, firefighters found the woman lying on the ice about a kilometre from the shore.
Enman added that Monday’s rescue went smoothly, despite being the department’s first ice rescue in a few years.Following her return to shore, the woman was taken to the hospital. Enman was unable to provide an update on her condition. Kristin Gardiner is a reporter with the SaltWire Network in Prince Edward Island. She can be reached by email at
