“These two films target very different demographics, so releasing them on the same weekend will still be serviceable for both studios,” Bock adds. “To tell you the truth, both of these films should be in the top 10 by summer’s end.” Every studio has a lot on the line this summer, but coming out of CinemaCon this year Dergarabedian felt a palpable feeling of optimism on behalf of studios and theatre owners. “After three rather unconventional summer movie seasons, they are looking to a return to form for this all-important, 18-week season that on average accounts for about 40% of the total year’s box office revenues,” he says.
