After spending almost 15 years as second-in-command, Deputy Premier Roger Cook is set to become leader of the WA Labor Party and Western Australia’s 31st premier.
It’s been a whirlwind 30 hours for Cook, who had been scheduled to board a plane to the United States on Monday night until news broke of Mark McGowan’s shock resignation. He wasted no time declaring his intention to run for the top job.
Cook was elected to the seat of Kwinana in 2008, winning by a mere 300-vote margin. Ten days later, he was appointed deputy leader, serving under former Labor leader Eric Ripper. But it was the very role that saw him thrust into the spotlight, appearing alongside Premier Mark McGowan almost daily during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was relieved of the troubled portfolio during a major cabinet reshuffle in December 2021, which saw him handed State Development, Jobs and Trade, Hydrogen, Tourism, and Science instead. One of seven children, Cook attended Scotch College before attending both Murdoch University and Curtin University, studying arts and public administration before completing a master of business administration.
