Parents and educators can help students cultivate and identify their interests by starting with personality.
A common challenge for future college applicants goes like this: Students reach tenth or eleventh grade, and their educators and parents say, “What are you interested in? What will you study in college?” Students then wonder when they were supposed to have discovered their true passions.
The question is important, but the way to answer it is not to ask students to ruminate independently on past experiences. It’s to provide them learning experiences where they can experiment and cultivate their interests.
A student’s passion for European art history as opposed to, say, astronomy, isn’t a simple case of inherent interest or even ability. It evolved gradually over time and with external support: a lesson on post-war modernist art turns into conversations with a teacher, which leads to visits to a museum and maybe eventually to the addition of an art history minor to a pre-med course load.
Studies have shown that individuals who believe their passion is fixed often struggle to cope with the challenges that arise on their journey and even tend to abandon their interests. As an alternative, mentors should encourage students to approach their passion as a journey: a process of development in areas of their choice.
