One of the biggest questions heading into this training camp is who will start the season on the No. 1 line with Suzuki and Caufield. Head coach Martin St. Louis said he has plenty of options and he will use training camp and the six preseason games as an audition. But why Heineman with Suzuki and Caufield to start?
Heineman played most of last season in the Swedish Hockey League, posting 8-7-15 totals in 35 games with Leksands IF before joining the AHL’s Laval Rocket in mid-March. The adjustment to the smaller North American rink can be difficult for European players, as Juraj Slafkovsky showed last season as an 18-year-old with the Canadiens after being the No. 1 overall pick at the NHL Draft. But Heineman said he prefers the smaller rink and it showed with Laval as he posted 7-2-9 totals in 11 games.
When Caufield was asked what type of player can best complement him and Suzuki, he said: “I think first off there’s a lot of options that we have. I think we have a lot of guys that complement us. I think compete is probably the biggest thing. A guy that complements us competes hard in all three zones. I think our skills kind of help each other and there’s a lot of guys that could fill that role.”
