Emmanuel Macron's government uses special powers to force its unpopular change, raising the pension age through parliament despite over a week of mass protests by unions.
abc.net.au/news/french-protests-as-pension-reform-rushed-through/102108840A widely unpopular pension reform scheme has been pushed through France's parliament without a vote, defying mass protests throughout the country.
Ms Borne was greeted by boos and jeers as she arrived in the National Assembly, the lower house of French parliament, to announce that she would invoke article 49.3 of the constitution to skip a vote on the reform measures. When the session resumed, Ms Borne took the floor but her speech was largely drowned out by boos and chants from opposition members and shouts of "resignation", in rare chaotic scenes in the French parliament.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leader of the hard-left France Insoumise — which translates to France Unbowed — called the move "a spectacular failure."
