Led by John Tavares and Auston Matthews, the Leafs have won 52.3 per cent of their faceoffs, seventh best in the league. They were No. 1 last year.
“I remember one of my first few games, we were in Carolina and we went up against Rod Brind’Amour, and he almost broke my wrist,” said Tavares. “He was just so strong.”, it was Antoine Vermette who had his number, as well as a certain all-timer in Boston.
“So it was just really getting to that level of competitiveness on each and every draw, just knowing how vital those possessions are, and gaining that experience, learning what certain guys do, righties versus lefties, familiarity with the linesmen’s tendencies,” said Tavares. “You definitely get better with experience and with strength.”
“It’s about being able to cheat but without getting caught, essentially. So I think it was just like a number of things that blend into one. But I think a lot of it really is experience and gaining strength.”have a secret weapon, it might be assistant coach Manny Malhotra, one of the best faceoff men in recent league history. Malhotra was successful 59.7 per cent of the time at faceoffs over the final eight years of his career and he’s passing his experience on.
“He shows video and, and even at times throughout the game, if a guy is doing really well on the other team in face offs and he’s offering little cues, or reminders that might help you gain an advantage, get you out of that rhythm,” said Matthews.
