A Stratford teen has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the fatal stabbing of an Exeter man in Grand Bend nearly a year ago.
The judge cautioned Hartman’s family and friends in the gallery that no sentence can make up for their loss. Then she spent about an hour outlining comparable cases, many that fell in the eight- to 12-year range.She also pointed out Compton is a young man who will still be young when he’s released.Hartman, a former Lambton College police foundations student, was at the popular Southwestern Ontario beach not far from his hometown with a friend having a few drinks and listening to music.
Hartman died soon after in hospital while Compton and his friends fled before being arrested in the Stratford-area town of Mitchell during what police called a high-risk takedown. The trio all faced charges, including two counts of second-degree murder. Compton, sitting Monday in the prisoner’s box wearing a white Toronto Raptors hoodie and jeans, didn’t speak. But the teen concrete worker, who got a briefjust before Christmas to get his affairs in order, previously said people around him want to make excuses for what he did, blaming his age, lack of education, older friends, or drug and alcohol use.
