From scott_stinson: Connor Bedard puts on a show, and NHL teams get their tanking strategies ready
It’s a performance that has, naturally, caused people to lose their minds a little. Connor 2.0 has been called the best NHL prospect since Connor 1.0. He’s been called the best prospect since Sidney Crosby, who has won everything there is to win in the sport and would be in the Hockey Hall of Fame right now if he was not still playing.
But, also: Eight points in three games against Slovakia, Czechia and Sweden is not bad at all. And Bedard is still just 17 years old. The historically dominant performances at WJCs have come from players like Peter Forsberg who were a couple years older, when they are crucially more physically mature. Bedard is a baby-faced teen, but one possessed of a shot that is worthy of elite NHL veterans whose scars are covered up by their playoff beards.
More teams will join them in the race to the bottom, the only question is how many. Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia? Florida, Nashville, St. Louis? Ottawa? At what point does the realization that a team is unlikely to make the playoffs become a dash toward the bottom end of the standings and a chance to hoard lottery balls with Bedard’s name on them?
