Fernandez and Andreescu give Canada never\u002Dbefore\u002Dseen depth at the Billie Jean King Cup, especially when backstopped by the doubles talent of Dabrowski
Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard each looked like they might have the kind of success in singles that Daniel Nestor had in doubles, but both struggled with injuries and couldn’t become a consistent winner. Bianca Andreescu had her meteoric 2019 and U.S. Open win, but between injuries, a pandemic and mental health struggles, she’s still looking for another deep run at a Grand Slam.
Asked at a Monday morning press conference what he thought the Canadian team was capable of, interim head coach Sylvain Bruneau gave a succinct answer: “Everything,” he said. The potential, Bruneau said, was “unlimited.” That’s a reasonable assessment. Neither Andreescu nor Fernandez are on a hot run of form, but both have big-match experience and each has shown that when they are on their game they can play with anyone. Canada also has doubles ace Gabriela Dabrowski, a two-time Slam champion in mixed doubles and who is eighth in the WTA doubles rankings. Rounding out the team are Rebecca Marino, who is having a fine comeback season, and Carol Zhao.
Canada is in a group with Switzerland and Italy — countries that are much more accomplished on the international stage, where Canada has only once gone as far as the semi-finals in the competition. Italy has won it four times; Switzerland was once a finalist. But neither opponent would be a huge favourite in their tie. They are beatable.Article content
