“People have asked about how you can keep it (the draft) to the back of your mind. It’s pretty easy when you’re at the rink, trying to win games, trying to win a championship.”
VICTORIA — Bowen Byram was doing a little routine pre-game stretching on the concourse at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre with teammates Tuesday when he got a better idea of what lies ahead for him in pro hockey.
“I saw it quickly,” Byram said Wednesday of the draft lottery. “I tried to keep it to the back of my mind.” There has been suggestion among various pundits that Byram is in the running to go No. 3 to the Chicago Blackhawks. The buzz in WHL circles, and around Save-On-Foods the past couple of days, is that he doesn’t get past the Los Angeles Kings or the Detroit Red Wings .
And you could appreciate him not wanting to speculate too much about what might happen in June, especially with the Giants involved in the WHL playoffs, carrying a 3-0 series lead on Victoria into a game here Thursday. “Knowing that he’s committed to us helps us a lot. No one is in it for their own thing. It’s a team game. It’s the way he was brought up. He’s pretty down to earth. He doesn’t get caught up in his own self, ego things. He’s done a good job of being about the team.”2019 #NHLDraft prospect @BowenByram of @WHLGiants #WHLHoN pic.twitter.com/VLjumnSPCM
The 6-1, 192-pound Byram now has three goals and nine assists in nine playoff games, to go with a plus-eight rating. He had 26 goals, 71 points and a plus-33 rating in 67 regular-season contests.
