The Maple Leafs needed Garret Sparks to be sharp. That's exactly what they got on Wednesday. (via reporterchris)

BUFFALO, N.Y. — When the third period arrived, it was basically Garret Sparks’ game to lose.had thoroughly dominated the Buffalo Sabres in the second half of a back-to-back, but only owned a one-goal lead with 20 minutes to play.Sparks was steady enough after getting an early insurance goal, securing his first victory since Feb. 2 in what became a 4-2 win on Tuesday.

The best save of the night for Sparks came on an early short-handed breakaway from Johan Larsson, but it was soon followed by a Casey Mittelstadt power-play goal. The Leafs goalie was sliding out of his crease when the puck deflected in off his blocker. Matthews and William Nylander created some good puck possession down low before John Tavares found a skittering rebound at 18:32 of the second period and then Mitch Marner had a shot bounce in off Rasmus Ristolainen just 22 seconds into the third.

This has to be considered a high point in an up-and-down season for Sparks. It should also be one of his final starts this year.
