Kimberly Neudorf was slapped with $37,000 in fines for attending and organizing protests in Aylmer in 2020 when gatherings were limited

When asked by Hampson if she had anything to say before her sentencing, Neudorf giggled and said she wanted to rely on her lawyer Rosy Rumpal.Rumpal said Neudorf had no criminal record and is “a law-abiding citizen . . . devoted wife, home-schooling mother of three children who has always believed in strong family ties and doing things together as a family. She lived in Aylmer for more than a decade and was involved in the Aylmer community through the arts.

Roads had to be closed and about 60 per cent of the downtown businesses had to close while the march went through. Local hockey had to be cancelled because of the gathering in front of the town’s arena. Hampson pointed to Superior Court Justice Renee Pomerance’s decision at the original trial and said while freedom of assembly and freedom of association were infringed by the emergency laws, “the limitations were reasonable and demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”Article content Hampson rejected Rumpal’s argument that there are other Charter challenges still to be heard in other courts for similar cases, but said that was “irrelevant to a sentencing in these circumstances.”Article content

“You have to let the community know that if you’re going to organize this type of activity which affects the lives of hundreds of people, that you’re going to pay a price dearly in order that someone is not going to do it again,” Huber said.
