This was a loss that will leave the Stampeders scratching their heads. They put up more yards, got more first downs and seemed to have the Ticats right where they wanted them with just over a minute to go in the game.A heroic last drive led by quarterback Dane Evans — who completed 17-of-25 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown — helped the Ticats snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Calgary Stampeders running back Ka’Deem Carey tries to escape the tackle of Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022.“I can come up with all the explanations and excuses in the world, but the bottom line is I turned the ball over way too much tonight,” Maier said. “Part of playing winning football is winning the turnover battle and I didn’t do a good job of that at all in the first half.
There was another Paredes field goal — he went 4-for-4 on the night — and then Maier found rookie receiver Tre Odoms-Dukes, who did well to get the ball across the line and into the end zone. The Ticats held a one-point lead in the final minutes, but a bizarre play-call on third-and-short deep in their own territory put the ball back in the Stamps’ hands, where they methodically moved it to the goal-line and then put it in third-string QB Tommy Stevens’ hands for their go-ahead touchdown.
