The host of Splendour in the Grass will be forced to pay $100,000 to nearby schools after hours-long queues for the event clogged the M1 Pacific Motorway, marooning students returning home in the resulting traffic jams

On Thursday, July 21, huge queues formed as thousands of festivalgoers attempted to enter the flooded venue, which is north of Byron Bay, with traffic congestion blocking the motorway, both directions of the Tweed Valley Way and the on and off ramps of the Yelgun Interchange. The first day of the festival was called off on Friday afternoon, but the event proceeded on Saturday and Sunday, as many patrons demanded ticket refunds.
“If they get it right, I don’t have any problem with it – but if they’re gonna have the larger numbers they need to get it right,” he said.
