The operator who accidentally piloted the Spidercam into an ugly collision with South Africa’s Anrich Nortje has been stood down from the remainder of the Boxing Day Test.
But the Spidercam was back in action on day three, albeit at a minimum height of four metres from the ground.Nortje was sent flying when the camera, which is suspended by wires above the MCG turf, did a low sweep from a height of about two metres about halfway to the boundary in mid-afternoon on the sweltering second day.Under agreed regulations between Fox, Cricket Australia and the ICC, Spidercam is not permitted to travel at less than 3.
“I saw cables and then I moved my head and then I saw the camera and I was a little bit too late. It was quite quick,” he said. “I didn’t know what really hit me, to be honest. It didn’t really change my mindset or anything. I tried to stay focused.
