The football president at the centre of a “trashy” kiss with a Spanish player after winning the World Cup has backtracked on his staunch defence of his actions, issuing an apology.
Spain’s Women’s side were soaking in the triumphant moments which followed the final whistle after overcoming England 1-0 in a tense final to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
After initially slamming criticism as “idiocy”, Rubiales eventually apologised in a video which was shared to Spanish media, acknowledging it had “somewhat tarnished" the celebration. “We saw it as something natural, normal and not in bad faith, but there are people who have been hurt by this and I have to apologise. There’s no other way, is there?”
He backtracked on that defence in his video on Monday, playing down his initial claims that “idiots are everywhere.”“It was because no one here on the inside gave it the slightest importance, but outside it has been given importance.
