The calf is approximately three to four-weeks-old and needs about 300 litres of milk per day to gain the strength necessary for the long swim back towards the Antarctic.

"We know how exciting it is to see a Southern Right Whale and its calf up close, but we're asking everyone to please keep your distance," National Parks and Wildlife Service's Andy Marshall said.

"The biggest threat to the survival of Southern Right Whales in NSW waters is disturbance from people getting too close."It's prompted authorities to ask that all watercraft stay at least 300 metres away and all drones are prohibited within 100 metres.A rare sight unfolded off Merimbula, a coastal town on NSW's south coast, yesterday with a large pod of orcas spotted metres from shore.
