Up to 15 millimetres of rain has already fallen overnight in affected areas, including Tara, in the Western Downs — which has born the brunt of the bushfires — and Wallangarra.

Firegrounds in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales are forecast to get a soaking over the weekend, after weeks of destructive blazes.

In northern NSW at Tenterfield, where four homes were destroyed this week, there was isolated rainfall of between 20 and 30 millimetres.BOM meteorologist Shane Kennedy said more widespread showers overnight could bring some "decent soaking rainfall, depending where the systems form". Queensland could also see severe thunderstorms, with damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall throughout the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and extending into the north-west today, with the possibility of isolated falls between 30 and 50 millimetres, he said.

Meanwhile near Bundaberg, where homes were also lost to fires this week, cooler temperatures are expected to help suppress fire conditions, although the region won't get the same soaking as the state's south. After a week of destruction in Gaza, the Palestinian death toll is climbing — and Israelis are facing a new threatAn alleged cult stayed hidden in the mountains for years until followers broke free.
