Local residents say they heard the sound of a whale crying out early this morning before it was released from a shark net.

"He [the rescuer] was just leaning over the boat cutting holes in the nets and probably took 20 minutes," he said.The whale calf and its mother were reunited and swam away. Drone operator Damian Coulter said it was "pretty wild" to hear a whale crying for help in the early hours of Sunday.Queensland's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has been contacted for comment.
