Considering it’s only the size of a wastepaper basket, this sub-sized subwoofer is anything but sub-par.

It’s capable of impressively big and loud and distortion-free bass. It’s not quite bass you feel in your bones – you’d want a pair of the full-sized Subs for that – but it’s enough that, when you hear it, you realise it was missing this whole time.

And, having said that about the Beam/Sub Mini pairing, we do think it’s an unbeatable combination for a small flat or, say, a holiday house, where space and cost might be constraints and where you might want a speaker system that works for music as well as it works as a small surround-sound system for your TV.

Even better, a Beam, a Sub Mini, and a pair of One speakers at the rear, that you could detach from the Beam if you just wanted well-separated stereo music. Or maybe a Ray instead of the Beam? Or maybe, one day if only Sonos would allow it, a pair of Roams as the rear speakers, and a Ray and a Sub Mini?

Like the physical universe, the Sonos universe is a big space, and the options seem endless. And, like the physical universe, it’s not quite as empty as we once thought.Dislikes | Some combinations can feel like they need more mid-range.
