An 84-year-old widow is fighting for her life after her son-in-law allegedly doused her with gasoline and set her on fire at her home in Barangay Bolinawan, Carcar City, on Jan. 5. The victim, Lolita Lico-an, suffered severe burns on her head and body, and was initially brought to the Carcar City Hospital. Due to the extent of her injuries, she was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for further treatment.
The suspect, Ignacio Brade Tribunalo, 55, was arrested after the incident and is facing charges of frustrated murder. According to Police Staff Sgt. Japeth Saavedra of the Carcar City Police Station, Tribunalo had gone to Lico-an's home looking for his wife, Suzette, the victim's daughter. At the time, Lico-an was doing laundry. When Lico-an told Tribunalo that she did not know her daughter's whereabouts, the suspect became enraged. Police said Tribunalo retrieved four bottles of gasoline from his bag and confronted the elderly woman. Despite Lico-an insisting that she did not know where Suzette was, Tribunalo allegedly poured gasoline on her and ignited the flames with a lighter. The suspect fled the scene, but was soon caught by neighbors who witnessed the event. He was handed over to responding police officers. Authorities believe Tribunalo may have been under the influence of liquor during the attack. Police also revealed that the victim's daughter had recently left their home due to alleged repeated physical abuse by Tribunalo. The suspect is said to become violent when drunk, according to police reports. The victim's 11-year-old grandson witnessed the incident and filmed it on his mobile phone. Police investigators suggested that Tribunalo may have planned the attack, as he was later seen leaving the area with his two children. The case remains under investigation as authorities prepare the charges against Tribunalo
