AFL: Giants CEO David Matthews has slammed Victorian clubs, branding them narrow-minded as the debate over academies rages.

Andrew Dillon has declared that the AFL is exploring all avenues to try and introduce State of Origin back into the league’s annual fixture.

Traditionally a match that saw Victoria clash with South Australia, the only two instalments of a State of Origin saw Victoria instead play an ‘All-Stars’ side in 2008 and 2020; with the matches as a celebration for the 150th year of Australian rules football and a bushfire relief match respectively.

“I’d love to see the best of the best playing in the men’s and women’s competition. How that plays itself out is a conversation ,” Dillon said. In 2008, fans were treated to the likes of Brendon Fevola, Adam Goodes and Chris Judd all lining up in Victorian colours, while the All-Stars team brought together Lance Franklin, Andrew McLeod and Daniel Kerr.
