Caitlin Wildman, UPEI student and a member of Students Support the UPEIFA, said many of the issues the faculty union is fighting for will help increase the quality of education for students, including hiring more full-time faculty and evening out the student-to-faculty ratio. Cody McEachernCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — With negotiations between university faculty and administration falling through, some UPEI students are concerned yet supportive of a possible strike in the near future.
“From the survey and people we’ve talked to, there is support for the teachers to go on strike to improve our learning conditions and their working conditions.” UPEI Faculty Association president Michael Arfken says up until this point, the university has seen no reason to negotiate with the faculty union. However, he said the hope is the strike mandate will show the administration how serious members are about the proposals they've made. - Stu Neatby
In an emailed response to SaltWire Network, a spokesperson for UPEI said it is willing to return to negotiations but with the assistance of mediator Michelle Flaherty. On salaries, Arfken said the proposal the university has is the first one offered by the UPEIFA, which was set to the rate of inflation. However, he said the intent was for the union to compromise on salaries if other proposals were accepted.
