Forging a living off the land is not for the faint-hearted and is a lifestyle reserved for those with farming in their blood

Lauralee Ledrew and her husband Mark own and operate Upper Humber Settlement, a farm and bed and breakfast, in Cormack. — ContributedSaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for August 16, 2023 | SaltWireCORNER BROOK, N.L. — Lauralee and Mark Ledrew grew up in a community built around farming and are descendants of farmers, but neither of their immediate families worked the land for a living.

So, it’s no surprise to the Ledrews they now find themselves forging a life together by growing crops and raising animals at Upper Humber Settlement, their six-acre homestead just north of Deer Lake. They also built their barn from the same wood source, though the siding came from renovations Mark’s aunt was doing to a property. “We’re hoping to do some tourism development,” said Ledrew. “We’re hoping to access some leased land to turn the homestead into a larger small-scale farm with the help of tractors, machinery and technology to increase the amount of production and yield, so we can contribute to food security on the island.”

He admits he never had the greatest marks in high school and left home in 1990 to work in an Ontario factory, but it was far from his dream life.“One night, I decided enough is enough,” said Blackmore. “I knew what I wanted to do. I didn’t know how I was going to get there, but I was going to get there.”

Three children and 25 years later, the sacrifices are paying off for Blackmore and his family. Linda maintains her nursing career, but the Blackmores still live off-grid — producing the electricity they need via a generator, running a small herd of goats, which are mostly sold for meat — and produce about 150,000 pounds of vegetables.
