Community contributions from donors like the Times Colonist Christmas Fund help make holiday season memorable for youth living in Threshold housing
The holiday season can be challenging for the teens and young adults Threshold Housing Society helps. For some, it’s hard to be away from their families, while others with difficult family backgrounds have unhappy memories of Christmases past.
The community helps make the season memorable, often providing tickets to Christmas activities and other December events for its clientele, ranging from trips to Butchart Gardens to concerts, Whissell said. She said some of Threshold’s youth have dealt with homelessness on and off for most of their lives, while others come to the society after aging out of the foster-care system at 19.
She said youth homelessness can be hard to recognize — it can mean staying with friends, couch surfing or living in a car. There is also a program called Foundations, sponsored by Coast Capital Savings, that teaches a range of life skills, as well as a fund established by the Rotary Club of Oak Bay to help with educational pursuits.
