Most people know the story of Jimmy Carter. He was the president who transitioned the United States from Nixon to Reagan. His presidency was truly distinctive, blossoming on the world stage for decades after he left the White House.Article content This is no trivial matter. Born to their time and circumstances, the Carters broke the traditional roles of husband and wife in a culture locked into a pattern of male dominance.
Right after that first meeting in Carter’s office, he asked if I would serve as an observer in the first multi-party elections in Zambia. You don’t have to guess what my answer was. On one memorable occasion, we had a first-hand experience with rural transport when our little bus broke down. I felt right at home as my duct tape and wire skills were pressed into service.
He had a profound understanding of the importance of acting on commitment, being in the field even in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. He knew that his example made a difference and helped other people make their full contribution.
