The Flames needed the win in Vancouver to keep pace with the Jets in the wildcard battle, and clawed back to within two points of Winnipeg.

That won’t matter even a tiny bit to the Flames, who needed a win to keep pace with the Winnipeg Jets after they defeated the Detroit Red Wings earlier in the day. Two points was the only thing that would cut it, and when Toffoli potted his second of the night after a nifty feed from Mikael Backlund, it meant the Flames left Vancouver only two points back of the Jets, who occupy the Western Conference’s second wildcard spot.

But they stuck with it and tied things up when Toffoli scored his first and Blake Coleman added another. It was back-and-forth from there, with the Canucks eventually taking a 4-3 lead in the third period thanks to goals from Aidan McDonough and Anthony Beauvillier, while Troy Stecher added one of his own for the Flames.

“You miss the penalty shot, it could probably go the other way with your game, but he didn’t,” said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. “He got better.”
