ICYMI: New UCP boss Danielle Smith must grow support beyond her base, political experts say yyc ableg abpoli ucpldr
Smith beat out six other candidates on the sixth ballot as the results of the UCP leadership campaign were revealed Thursday evening. She is expected to be sworn in as premier on Tuesday, and will then need to win a byelection to gain a seat in the legislature. Smith has previously said she would like to run in a rural riding and for a byelection to be called quickly, so she can introduce planks of her platform herself, including the highly debated Alberta Sovereignty Act.
“She’s going to have to find some way of delivering on what she’s promised her supporters in the party while still managing to keep the confidence of the caucus,” said Young. “Her external challenge is that there’s an election coming in only seven months, and the polls that have been released so far suggest that she is not particularly popular with the Alberta electorate.”
