'Slowest grad' Arthur Ross earns arts degree from UBC — 54 years after enrolling

Ross, now 71, left UBC after two years to pursue acting and then later law. After he retired he decided to finish his BA.

He figured an English degree would suit him. But two years in he developed a passion for being on stage. And then he was offered the opportunity of a lifetime — to study acting at the National Theatre School in Montreal.There was also a pivotal moment after performing in a Chekov play, when he felt emotionally drained from the role.Arthur Ross in 1969. Photo: UBC handout.Ross decided to use his debate and public-speaking skills and went into law, which he studied at the University of Toronto.

After retiring in 2016, and having that revelation at the opera, Ross enrolled in one UBC history course at a time. While he may have a new degree, he doesn’t plan to start another career. He’s content to pursue his hobbies, such as skiing, and is grateful for the opportunity and sense of accomplishment.
