A driver managed to climb out of a vehicle relatively unscathed after flipping it onto its side in Nanaimo Saturday morning, according to fire crews.

The single-vehicle incident happened along Hammond Bay Road near Polaris Drive just after 8 a.m., Bryun Ashlie, a captain with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, told CHEK News on scene.“The gentleman that was driving the vehicle slowed down at the top of the hill and then started to fishtail and just lost control and ended up in the ditch here, flipping his vehicle,” he said.

“Fortunately, he’s OK. He has a bit of a sore neck, but he’s not seeking any medical attention and he’s going to maybe go to the hospital later if it gets any worse.” Ashlie says the incident prompted the fire department to call the city and ask crews to salt the section of road “to make sure that it’s safe for everybody.”Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.“Right now, we’re just offering control of the intersection, so one-lane traffic just to prevent people from wiping out again,” the fire captain said at the time.

He adds that the incident serves as a good reminder to slow down when behind the wheel, especially as winter weather rolls in.
