Skill and satire led Roberto Luongo strombone1 to the Hall of Fame Via sunhornby HHOF
He’s the first netminder drafted in the top five overall to be inducted, was the first goalie to serve as a team captain in the modern era and first NHLer to have three quarters of a million follow him on a whimsical Twitter account.
Chosen by the New York Islanders in 1997, Luongo won his first NHL game, a 43-save 2-1 decision over Boston. But when he didn’t dominate as much as general manager Mike Milbury wanted, the team drafted Rick DiPietro first overall in 2000, trading Luongo to a poor defensive Florida team. Not until his fifth and final year with the Panthers did he have a winning season, leaving plenty of openings for him to crack wise about his lack of support, while thrice playing 65-plus games.
Completing one of the most elongated geographical journeys by a goalie, Luongo went from the streets of Montreal where his Italian immigrant father had set up, to teams on Long Island, Miami Beach and the North Shore mountains, then a second stint with the Panthers. “Every time I go back there it warms my heart,” said Luongo, now Florida’s goalie coach. “The reception from the fans is always something that makes me feel really happy. There were some rocky moments; but at the end of the day, I love playing there. A huge part of my heart still belongs in Vancouver.”
“He was very adaptable to the team he was playing with. Alain’s team did not score many goals. Roberto was a real leader.”
