A massive search and rescue mission is underway for a tourist vessel that disappeared in deep waters off the coast of southeastern Canada on an expedition to see the shipwreck of the Titanic.
of the Earth via the North and South poles by an aircraft, and last year took part in the fifth human space flight by Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos.
“A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow. We started steaming from St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning. Until then we have a lot of preparations and briefings to do.” The shipwreck of the Titanic rests 3.7 kilometres beneath the surface, which takes about two hours to reach by submersible. Early reports suggested the vessel had lost contact with its Canadian expedition ship on the surface, MV Polar Prince, one hour and 45 minutes into the dive.
International oceanographer and explorer David Gallo said rescuers working to locate the vessel faced conditions most people had never experienced, describing the ocean depths as being “like a visit to another planet”. Even if the sub had experienced difficulty and drifted, it would be moving at a pace of about 3km/h, “so the search area should be small ... it means that you can focus on a very tight area and bring your sonars in and cameras in”, Gallo said.
Air inside submersibles is commonly recycled, meaning carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is added. However, as time goes on, the vessel will lose the ability to scrub enough carbon dioxide, and the air inside will no longer sustain life, according toAlso critical to survival is the continued running of the vessel’s batteries, which run heaters that maintain warmth in the freezing depths.
