Thirty years after the Lions' historic victory against Pahang in the Malaysia Cup final, fans are reminiscing about the unforgettable night. Two young twins, Fadly and Farid, became an iconic symbol of the celebration when they were carried by their father amidst the jubilant crowd.
Singapore fans celebrating the national team during the 1994 Malaysia Cup final against Pahang at Shah Alam Stadium on December 17. Like a scene from the 1994 animated film The Lion King, an iconic photo from the final has endured for 30 years – that of four-year-old twins Fadly and Farid dressed in identical lion suits and held aloft by their father Jamil Sulong.
That memorable photo was captured on December 17, 1994, when the Lions defeated Pahang 4-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium to clinch both the M-League and Malaysia Cup, igniting wild celebrations among the 50,000 Singaporean fans present and many more back home. Now 34, Fadly shared: “My brother and I were just four years old, but it’s an atmosphere you never forget. It’s a night that has inspired us to be lifelong supporters of the national team, no matter their performance.” It was a bonus that we got a photograph (of our father carrying us) to remember forever. We bought a few copies of that newspaper and have kept them.” The family became ardent followers of the Lions midway through the 1992 season. Jamil, 70, told The Straits Times that he was part of the Die-Hard Fans group and the family would travel to all the Lions’ away games with bus operator Akbar Hashim. They would stay at the same hotel as the Lions, which provided fans like him with an unforgettable opportunity to interact with the players before and after games. On December 17, exactly 30 years after the historic final, some diehard fans, such as Akbar, were able to reunite with players from the 1994 team at a 30th-anniversary event organized by the Football Association of Singapore at the National Stadium. During the 1990s, Akbar was one of at least three tour bus operators, including Walter Koh, that transported Singaporeans across the Causeway for matches.
