The travel expert shared his top four European holiday destinations in an interview with BBC Breakfast
Travel expert Simon Calder has shared his top picks for affordable European holiday destinations in 2024.Simon said: "Your money goes further in Bulgaria. We've been telling everyone for years that Bulgaria is a great holiday destination, about how wonderful the weather is, how soft the sandy beaches are, the excellent hotels and of course the low cost of living there.
He also suggested Montenegro as a cheaper alternative to Croatia or Italy, with its UNESCO World Heritage site Kotor Old Town and stunning beaches in Budva. Portugal is a top pick for an affordable holiday in Western Europe, and Simon suggests visiting Lisbon or the nearby area of Cascais. Simon said: "I love Lisbon, one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, and the locations on its western flanks - in particular Cascais, Estoril and Sintra.", reports the Express.
For a fantastic meal, Simon recommends O Barbas in Costa da Caparica, a seafood restaurant with stunning views of the Atlantic coast. Albania is also becoming a hot spot for travellers in Europe, and it might even outshine Greece because of its great deals. Simon said: "It is beautiful and very friendly.
